National Federation of the Blind of Kentucky
2019 Financial Assistance Application
Las Vegas, Nevada
July 7-12, 2019
The board of directors of the NFB of Kentucky met and determined that in efforts to grow excitement and enthusiasm within the NFB of Kentucky, we intend to help support our members in attending the 2019 national convention of the National Federation of the Blind that is scheduled for July 7-12, 2019 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Our attendance at national convention has dwindled in the past few years, and we want to re-kindle excitement within the affiliate. NFB of Kentucky will provide scholarships to individuals based on financial need and available resources. Is this your first NFB National Convention? If so, the first thing you want to do is check out the First Timer's Guide for information and resources including the Kenneth Jernigan Convention Scholarship. We want to provide assistance to as many individuals as possible, but our resources are limited. Therefore, the affiliate cannot provide full convention expenses. Members are encouraged to seek out others who may be interested in sharing hotel room expenses in order to decrease the cost of attending convention. Other ways to decrease convention costs include visiting a grocery store when arriving at convention and buying food for breakfast and lunch to eat in your rooms. This will decrease the costs of eating in the hotel restaurants. Or, you might consider shortening your convention time by planning to arrive the day before general sessions begin. Sometimes you must be creative in how you make convention plans.
Individuals are required to apply on-line for this financial assistance. All applications must be received no later than March 15, 2019. If you are interested in attending, you are encouraged to apply. There is no obligation if you decide prior to receiving money that you are unable to accept a scholarship that is awarded. However, if you do accept a financial scholarship, please be sure to review the requirements and obligations prior to receiving the award. You will be notified no later than April 15, 2019 if you are receiving a scholarship and the amount of that scholarship.
Note: Please understand that submitting an application for a financial scholarship to attend the 2019 national convention of the National Federation of the Blind in Las Vegas, Nevada does not ensure that you will receive financial assistance. Awards will be made based on the number of individuals who apply and the financial resources available.
If you receive financial assistance, you are required to attend all three days of the general sessions sitting with the Kentucky delegation and you must attend the annual banquet, which is the highlight of the convention.
You are required to attend two additional meetings, of your choice, listed on the agenda. These may include division and/or interest group meetings, the open board meeting, etc.
If you are awarded a scholarship to attend the 2019 convention, you will be expected to write an article of no less than 100 words that tells about your convention experience. What meetings did you attend in addition to the general sessions and the banquet? What new things did you learn? How did you grow as a Federationist? These articles will be included in the 2019 summer issue of the Kentucky Cardinal, the newsletter of the NFB of Kentucky which will come out in late summer. Articles must be emailed to Lora Felty Stephens at Email Lora by August 1, 2019.
All applications for financial assistance must be received no later than March 15, 2019. Individuals will be notified of their scholarship awards no later than April 15, 2019.
If you are awarded a scholarship, you are required to pre-register and purchase your banquet ticket for national convention through the on-line convention registration process. Pre-registration for the 2019 National Federation of the Blind National Convention is available on the National Federation of the Blind website until May 31, 2019. If you do not pre-register by May 31, 2019, you will not be eligible to receive any financial assistance that has been awarded.
Prior to receiving your scholarship money, proof of your registration must be provided to Cathy Jackson, President of the NFB of Kentucky. Email a copy of your registration receipt to Email Cathy. In addition, before receiving your money, you are required to sign a document stating that if you are unable to attend the convention after receiving scholarship money, you will return those funds in full to the treasury of the National Federation of the Blind of Kentucky.
